President Emmerson Mnangagwa has commended the nation for embracing the National Clean-up exercise which he launched last year.

Speaking at the official opening of the Inaugural Environment Forum held today in Harare, President Mnangagwa urged citizens to preserve and protect the environment for the benefit of the present and the future.

The Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year, and this year's theme is “Dialogue for Environmental Sustainability."

President Mnangagwa said Zimbabwe as a signatory of the International Environmental Treaties is obliged to play its part in contributing to global sustainable development targets.

"The daunting statistics on urban population growth, increasing waste dumps, scarcity of clean drinking water in urban areas as well as overgrazing, soil erosion and exhaustion in the rural areas, further gives us the impetus to develop innovative cross cutting strategies to turn the tide on these environmental ills," said the President.

He said the Government would continue to promote conversation and use of natural resources in a manner which maintains intra-and inter- generational equity.

"As we industrialise and modernise our economy, it is undoubtedly imperative that we mitigate the environmental and ecological risks," said the President.

He deplored building of settlements on wetlands, saying that it destroys rivers, the natural green and affect wildlife.

“We should be the best protectors of our flora and fauna," said President.

He encouraged the use of environmental modalities that protect human and animal species.

He condemned the dumping of waste and effluent into water bodies or open places which may cause dire health and pollution consequences.

He urged mining companies to be in harmony with nature.

"It is paramount that mines implement proper waste management and engage in land reclamation upon termination of their opencast mining operations," said the President.

“We must develop environmental management systems which enhance compliance with Environmental Management Agency's regulations and local authority by-laws," said President.

He implored stakeholders to comply with the law and regulations with regards to the need for environmental quality standards and plans.

He urged the media to continue writing on environmental issues.
