Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has assured that Zimbabwe is progressing towards a middle economy as it now only requires 350 more base stations to connect the whole country to the network coverage, the Harare Post can report.

Addressing delegates at the World Communication and Information Society Day commemorations briefing in Gutu over the weekend, POTRAZ Director General, Dr Gift Machengete said that the country needs 350 more base stations so that it will have adequate network coverage.

He also said that the country currently has 7 863 base stations and plans were afoot to court investors to build more and bridge the gap.

“Three hundred and fifty base stations are needed to cover other grey areas in the country. We are looking for investors to invest in those areas. We are negotiating with those who can help us so that everywhere is under network coverage.

“Through the Universal Services Fund (USF), POTRAZ has already erected 20 base stations across the country in an effort to bridge this gap,” he said.

Harare Post has learnt, the World Communication and Information Society Day commemorations are observed on 17th May each year. This year the commemorations were celebrated under the theme “Bridging the Standardisation Gap.”
