USAID/Zimbabwe Assistance Program in Malaria (ZAPIM) has commended the Government of Zimbabwe for registering a considerable decline in malaria cases and deaths as it commemorates World Malaria day.
In a press statement, USAID/ZAPIM said, “The United States Government stands with the people of Zimbabwe in commemorating World Malaria Day on April 25 and celebrates the considerable decline in malaria cases and deaths.”
USAID Mission Director, Stephanie Funk stated that data available shows a notable decline in malaria cases and deaths.
He said, “Malaria has long threatened the people of Zimbabwe, but the data show a notable decline in malaria cases and deaths. USAID is proud to be a partner in such impressive progress.”
According to data from the Ministry of Health, there were 264,278 malaria cases and 192 deaths from malaria in 2018 representing a substantial decline from the previous year, a 44 percent reduction in cases and a 63 percent reduction in deaths.
Relatedly, USAID/VectorLink expressed its commitment to support Government of Zimbabwe in its endeavour to prevent and control malaria through the National Control Program.
In a press statement, VectorLink said, “We are committed to support the control of malaria through implementing safe and effective indoor residual spraying, provide effective IRS campaign and malaria control messaging, conduct environmental compliance (EC) and safety in IRS operations, conduct and build capacity in monitoring mosquitoes that cause malaria.”
Regional collaboration on malaria elimination in Zimbabwe continues to strengthen cross border in collaboration with the neighbouring countries. In this regard, the E8 regional grant has facilitated the setting up of five static clinics along the border with Mozambique and South Africa so as to increase access to health services by mobile and cross border.
