…as it is working to restore power generation at Hwange
Power utility, Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) Holdings has assured that it has the capacity to uphold the country’s electricity demand despite a fire incident which occurred at Hwange Power Station, last evening (Wednesday).
In a statement Zesa Holdings assured the nation of continued electricity supply.
“Although we lost 140MW to load shedding between 1730hours and 2130hours due to suspension of load on units 2 and 5, we are in the process of firing the two units to restore power supply to the national grid.
“Normal supply is expected to resume on Thursday the 11th of February 2021,” assured Dr Sydney Gata, Zesa executive chairman.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) lost 140MW from the national grid after Hwange Power Station was said to have caught fire which then resulted in load-shedding in some parts of the country as efforts were being made to restore power.
“The fire broke out in the Unit 1 boiler as a result of a leak in the diesel supply fuel line and lasted for about 40 minutes. There were no casualties arising from the fire,” explained Gata.
The Hwange Power Station is the country’s largest thermal power station.
He added that the power utility was progressively taking steps to improve power supply. Since last year Zesa had improved in power generation, resulting in limited load- shedding for both domestic and industrial customers.
