The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) has added 150 MW to the national grid after improving electricity generation at Hwange Power Station (HPS).
The adding of 150 MW to the national grid is a result of the connection of unit 5 at HPS.
Speaking to this publication, ZPC said, “Unit 5 was connected to the national grid at 10:55hrs on Saturday after firing its burner at 01:43hrs, giving the nation an extra 150 MW.
“The 150 MW will have a huge impact in alleviating effects of load shedding,” said ZPC.
Government is making commendable strides in ending load shedding and power imports with the overall goal to be power self-sufficient by 2023.
Other projects under way in light of the above include the Hwange 7 and 8 expansion project, Kariba South expansion project and Gwanda Solar project which are set to deliver 600 MW to the national grid.
Power is one of the major drivers of economic development in sectors such as mining, agriculture and manufacturing.
Established in Hwange between 1983 and 1987, HPS currently operates 6 units with an installed capacity of 920MW.
