Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) has said two electricity generation units, 3 and 6 will be back in service at Hwange Power Station (HPS) before year end, adding a total of 265MW to the national grid.
HPS Acting General Manager, Eng Tom Chuma said the two units, 3 and 6 are currently under repair and maintenance works.
“We are currently engaging external contractors Siemens, General Electric and Guastini Power and work should resume after resolving the quarantine issues,” he said.
He said unit 3 was undergoing a major overhaul, while at unit 6, a rotor earth fault is being attended to.
“Unit 3 will be back in service by, 1 December 2020, and unit 6 will back, on 1 October 2020.
“COVID-19 has hampered progress and we are working on ways to progress under the circumstances,” he said.
Established in Hwange between 1983 and 1987 HPS has 6 units with an installed capacity of 920MW. Currently HPS is being expanded to add units 7 and 8 which will add 600MW to the national grid. Power is one of the major drivers of economic development and government is working flat out to ensure its availability.
