An Athlone woman was left in shock on Monday evening after five men robbed a supermarket and hijacked her car.
The woman had just shopped at the OK Mini Mark in Thornton when robbers struck.
On their way out of the shop, they held her at gun-point and took her car, a white Ford Kuga.
The incident happened just before 8 pm and one security officer was shot and wounded in the attack.
The Daily Voice arrived at the scene shortly thereafter, where the woman’s husband stood outside, waiting on the police to let her out of the store.
The man, who asked that neither he nor his wife be named, says she was hysterical when she called him to say she’s been hijacked.
“I was in Belhar and rushed to the shop. Police were already here and had cordoned off the scene. I had to wait until she had given a statement,” he says.
“They asked her for her keys as they were leaving and she said ‘no’. The guy then pointed the gun at her and said if she did not hand over her keys, he would shoot her, and she gave it.
“Her car is a white Ford Kuga. We never ever come here to this store, and she never will again,” he added.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirms: “A business robbery case and an attempted murder case was opened for investigation by Pinelands police following an incident that occurred on Monday at 8.30pm in the business premises at Thor Circle, Thornton.
