Schools in Mashonaland East have been hailed as champions of environmental conservation following the Clean Schools Competition Awards and International Day of Zero Waste commemoration held yesterday at Kwenda High School.
The event, attended by Government officials and traditional leaders, underscored the need for schools to take the lead in waste management and sustainable practices.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo, praised the participating schools for their dedication to keeping their surroundings clean.
“Today, we gather not only to celebrate the achievements of our students but also to reaffirm our commitment to a sustainable environment. Embracing zero waste helps protect our ecosystems and conserve resources,” Ndudzo said.
Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Tinoda Machakaire, urged young people to take ownership of environmental conservation efforts.
“We must all keep our environment safe by adopting proper waste management practices. This is not just about schools; it is about shaping a generation that values sustainability,” he said.
He also took the opportunity to warn students against drug and substance abuse, calling it a major threat to their future.
The Clean Schools Competition recognised outstanding schools in environmental management.
Madyangove Primary School from Masvingo claimed first place in the primary category, with Hurungwe Primary School from Murewa finishing second.
In the secondary schools category, Kwenda High School, from Mashonaland East, emerged as the top winner.
Kwenda High School Headmaster Mr Chiwenga vowed to maintain their top position, stating, “We are committed to setting the standard for environmental responsibility.”
The event reinforced Zimbabwe’s commitment to a cleaner and greener future, with schools playing a key role in promoting environmental stewardship.
