Government has escalated its response to the fall armyworm infestation in Gutu South constituency by supplying farmers with Carbaryl powder, a pesticide specially designed to combat this destructive pest.
The intervention was part of broader efforts to secure crops and maintain food security in the area.
Agricultural extension officer in Gutu South constituency, Lawrence Makanda, confirmed that local teams were working around the clock to manage the outbreak effectively.
According to Makanda, consistent monitoring of crops, direct farmer engagement, and targeted pesticide applications are essential measures being taken to curb the infestation.
"Our teams have intensified their operations against fall armyworms. We strongly advise farmers to inspect their fields daily. Early detection is critical to avoid significant crop damage and potential losses," Makanda explained.
Extension officers have expanded their outreach efforts, running awareness campaigns through community visits to educate farmers on effectively identifying and managing armyworm outbreaks.
Makanda highlighted the strategic approach to pest control, noting that armyworms move predictably, allowing agricultural officers to place pesticides ahead of their anticipated path—a method similar to establishing fireguards for fire prevention.
Local farmers have welcomed these proactive measures. Ishmael Matopa, from Gusha Village, expressed gratitude for the Government's timely support, noting that these actions have significantly reduced the risk to their crops.
"We appreciate the swift action taken by agricultural officers in helping us identify and tackle armyworm breeding grounds. Government’s provision of pesticides ensures we are adequately prepared for any outbreaks," Matopa said.
The fall armyworm poses a severe threat to critical staple crops like maize, sorghum, and millet.
Without effective control measures, these pests can devastate crops, leading to food shortages and significant financial hardships for affected farmers.
Agricultural experts are urging continued vigilance from the farming community, emphasising the importance of daily field inspections and immediate reporting of infestations.
Government has assured ongoing supply of pesticides and technical support to farmers, underscoring its commitment to protecting agricultural productivity and livelihoods in Gutu South and across Zimbabwe.
