Zanu PF has expelled several senior members in a sweeping disciplinary crackdown, with the party’s Politburo citing acts of disloyalty, factionalism, and indiscipline.
Among those expelled was Central Committee member Blessed Geza, whose actions were deemed treasonous against the State.
The ruling Party’s Secretary for Legal Affairs, Cde Patrick Chinamasa, announced the decision, emphasising that Zanu PF would not tolerate behaviourthat undermines its unity and authority.
Addressing a press conference at the Party’s headquarters in Harare, yesterday, Cde Chinamasa stated that Geza’s expulsion was necessary to uphold discipline within Zanu PF.
He stressed that maintaining Party cohesion was of utmost importance and that any attempts to destabiliseits structures would be met with swift and decisive action.
Alongside Geza, the Politburo also expelled several other members for offences ranging from factionalism to the misuse of social media.
Gifford Gomwe from Mashonaland West was expelled for creating a WhatsApp group that sought to undermine the party, while Kudakwashe Gopo from Masvingo was expelled for disrupting District Coordinating Committee meetings and forming a similar social media group.
Gutu East Member of Parliament Benjamin Ganyiwawas found guilty of attempting to unconstitutionally remove six district chairpersons, promoting factionalism, and holding unauthorised meetings where President Mnangagwa was criticised.
As a result, he will be recalled from Parliament, triggering a by-election for his seat.
In Harare, District Coordinating Committee 2 chairman Godwin Gomwe was expelled for factionalism and indiscipline, while provincial party member Edson Ringwa faced removal for illegally parcelling out stands in Chitungwiza.
Victor Manungo was accused of spreading falsehoods and causing divisions through social media, leading to his expulsion.
Cde Chinamasa explained that Manungo had demonstrated serious disloyalty by using online platforms to create discord within the Party, a transgression the Politburo could not ignore.
Spencer Mutero was also expelled for administering a social media group that was openly antagonistic towards the party’s leadership.
Cde Chinamasa stated that Mutero had personally attacked the President and First Secretary of the Party in violation of Section 549. The province had initially recommended a three-year suspension, but the Politburo deemed the offence severe enough to warrant expulsion.
Some members faced suspension rather than expulsion.
Kudakwashe Damson, the former Harare Provincial Political Commissar, received a three-year suspension after being found guilty of multiple charges. Blessing Kambumu was charged with secretly creating a fake social media account and insubordination.
While he will remain a card-carrying member of ZanuPF, he has been barred from holding any position for the next three years.
Roy Bila, the Member of Parliament for Chiredzi North, was cleared of all charges, while Calisto Bangu will appear before the National Disciplinary Committee to answer accusations of undermining the Party.
Former Harare Provincial Women’s League chairperson Ratidzo Mukarati, who had already been suspended for fanning factionalism, has been demoted to a lower-ranking position within the league.
Other members facing disciplinary action will soon be informed of their fate in their respective provinces and districts.
Cde Chinamasa reiterated that the actions taken by the Politburo reflect the party’s commitment to discipline and unity.
He emphasised that upholding these values was crucial to ensuring Zanu PF’s stability and warned that any attempts to destabilise the party’s structures would be met with firm and immediate consequences.
The crackdown signals a determined effort by the ruling Party to maintain order and control as it looks ahead to future political developments.
