Eight people arrested in Harare and Beitbridge as police intensify war on Drugs

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of eight individuals in connection with the unlawful possession of dagga, crystal meth, and unregistered medicines in Harare and Beitbridge.

The arrests, which took place between March 2 and March 4, 2025, are part of an ongoing crackdown on drug and substance abuse in the country.

The suspects have been identified as MphakamiseniDhlamini (41), Ishmael Chikara (35), Linda Jimu (26), Priviledge Muchenje alias Ndanatsei Muchenje (39), Sylia Tanyanyiwa (41), Simbarashe Maenzanise (41), Siphelile Mashamba (33), and Alice Shatirwa (29).

According to a police press statement, releasedyesterday, law enforcement officers recovered a total of 151 kilograms of dagga, 260 bottles of broncleer cough syrup, and an undisclosed quantity of crystal meth.

A significant portion of the confiscated dagga was seized at the Beitbridge Border Post, highlighting the continued use of border crossings for drug trafficking.

ZRP Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations), Commissioner Paul Nyathi, issued a stern warning to individuals involved in drug peddling and trafficking, stating that the police will enforce the law "without fear or favour."

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police issues a stern warning to individuals and groups involved in peddling and trafficking of drugs that the law will take its course without fear or favour,” Commissioner Nyathi said.

Police have urged the public to assist in the fight against drug abuse by reporting any illegal activities.

The arrests come amid growing concerns over the rise in drug-related crimes and substance abuse among youth in Zimbabwe.

Law enforcement agencies have been intensifying efforts to curb activities of drug syndicates and dismantle networks supplying dangerous substances to communities.

Government has recently introduced stricter measures and harsher penalties for those caught in drug trafficking, reinforcing its commitment to addressing the crisis.

As investigations continue, police have assured the public that more operations will be conducted to root out drug-related activities across the country.
