Persons with disabilities (PWDs), in Zimbabwe, have expressed their appreciation for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration, citing significant strides in promoting inclusivity, empowerment, and equal opportunities.

This recognition came during a special engagement at State House in Harare on Wednesday, where the President met with PWD representatives to discuss their needs and aspirations.

Speaking at the special engagement, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Edgar Moyo, reaffirmed the Government’s efforts to uplift PWDs through economic and social support programs.

“Persons with disabilities are being empowered through revolving loans and grants, which promote sustainable communities and independent living. National social protection programs such as the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM), Food Deficit Manual Strategy, and Assisted Medical Treatment Order directly benefit PWDs,” he explained.

Additionally, the Government provides capital and administrative grants to institutions offering residential care to PWDs. Employees who suffer injuries or loss of life while on duty are also compensated under the State Service Benefits Act.

“Yes, Your Excellency, resources from the Treasury may not always come on time, but the situation is improving,” Minister Moyo assured.

Special Advisor on National Disability Issues in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Rose Mpofu, praised President Mnangagwa for prioritising disability issues and ensuring PWDs are represented in key Government positions.

“We are grateful for President Mnangagwa’s leadership. The Government is actively working to meet the needs of PWDs. Thanks to the National Disability Policy, more PWDs are being assigned to important roles in Government ministries. You are a good father and a listening President,” she remarked.

The meeting underscored the Government’s commitment to disability inclusion, as beneficiaries shared their experiences and appreciation for the support they have received.

“The fact that we have been invited to the State House to have a discussion with the President shows that we have a listening and caring leader. We are grateful for all the support we are receiving from the Government,” said one participant.

Another attendee highlighted the Government’s free education policy, which ensures that children with disabilities have access to education up to university level.

“All children with disabilities are getting free education, and we appreciate this initiative because it empowers us to be self-reliant,” they added.

Others commended the Government for economic empowerment initiatives.

“I received a farm and capital to start my farming projects, including poultry. This has allowed me to become financially independent. My hope is that more PWDs receive similar support,” one farmer stated.

This engagement marks a significant step forward for Zimbabwe’s disability community, highlighting the Second Republic’s commitment to an inclusive society where no one is left behind. With policies and programs focused on education, economic empowerment, and social protection, the Government is laying a strong foundation for a future of equality and opportunity for all PWDs.
