Zimbabwean-born Reason Wafawarova, a former columnist for The Herald newspaper currently based in Australia, is increasingly becoming a security threat as he openly calls for an armed rebellion against theconstitutionally elected Government of Zimbabwe.
Wafawarova, who has been using his social media platforms to mobilise people to rise against the Government, is reportedly advocating for the formation of a rebel group named M25, which he envisions as the Zimbabwean equivalent of the notorious M23 rebels operating in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC).
According to security analysts, his calls for insurrection amount to terrorism, with fears that his incitement could destabilise the country if not curbed. Despite being thousands of miles away in Sydney, Wafawarova has allegedly positioned himself as the would-be leader of the group, intending to direct its activities remotely.
Political analysts and commentators who spoke to The Chronicle newspaper dismissed Wafawarova’s threats as delusional, describing him as an out-of-touch provocateur with no credible understanding of Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
“Wafawarova is nothing more than a keyboard warrior spewing inflammatory rhetoric from the safety of a foreign land. His knowledge of Zimbabwe’s current affairs is either outdated or based on hearsay or purely imaginary,” said Talent Mavhunga, a Harare-based political analyst.
Another commentator, Hilda Moyo, said Wafawarova’sbehaviour was reckless and should not be tolerated.
“His name is Reason, but he is showing no reason at all. Zimbabwe is a peaceful nation, and rogue elements like him should be weeded out before they corrupt others with their dangerous narratives. Zimbabwe should not tolerate individuals who seek to plunge the nation into chaos. The law should take its course against anyone who attempts to subvert our sovereignty, even if they are operating from outside the country,” said Moyo.
Meanwhile, legal experts have warned that Wafawarova’s actions could have serious repercussions, as inciting violence against a legitimate Government is a criminal offense under both Zimbabwean and international law.
As Zimbabwe continues to focus on economic development and national cohesion, voices calling for rebellion are expected to be met with strong legal consequences, ensuring that peace and stability remain intact.
