The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has reassured the nation of its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring justice, and fostering transparency in the legal system.
In a press release issued yesterday, the prosecuting body emphasised its independence and dedication to fairness in executing its constitutional mandate.
The NPAZ, which plays a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s justice system, reported that in 2024, it received 314 dockets from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC).
However, not all of these cases were immediately ready for trial, with authorities stressing that due diligence is required before prosecution.
The prosecuting body underscored its commitment to thorough investigations, stating that all dockets undergo meticulous review before being scheduled for court proceedings.
In an effort to strengthen the credibility of Zimbabwe’s legal processes, the NPAZ clarified that it does not rush cases to trial if they are incomplete or lack sufficient evidence.
Instead, the institution collaborates closely with investigative agencies to ensure that only well-prepared and legally sound cases proceed to court.
Many cases require further evidence, formalised under Form 242, while others are initially incomplete, necessitating additional investigative efforts before prosecution.
This, according to the NPAZ, accounts for the discrepancies in the numbers of dockets recorded by different agencies.
The success of prosecutions, the authority emphasised, is directly linked to the quality of investigations conducted.
To maintain judicial integrity, the NPAZ takes pride in ensuring that only complete and credible cases reach the courts.
It affirmed that all prosecutorial decisions are based on constitutional prerogatives, and the authority remains steadfast in its role of initiating criminal proceedings with objectivity and legal rigour.
As part of its broader mission, the NPAZ also reaffirmed its dedication to fostering strong partnerships with key government agencies to fortify the country’s justice system.
It highlighted the importance of collaboration in tackling corruption, enhancing the efficiency of legal proceedings, and ensuring that perpetrators of crime face justice within the framework of the law.
“The NPAZ remains resolute in its commitment to upholding justice, ensuring fairness, and fostering trust in the legal system. We appreciate the collaboration and support of all stakeholders in our collective pursuit of a just and transparent society,” the statement read.
By prioritising thorough case preparation, strengthening institutional partnerships, and reinforcing accountability within its operations, the NPAZ has reaffirmed its central role in maintaining the rule of law and combating crime and corruption in the country.
The statement from the NPAZ comes at a time when public trust in the justice system is a crucial factor in governance and social stability.
