Harare and other urban centers have turned into traffic chaos zones, with public transport operators frequently flouting road regulations. This lawlessness has, in some cases, led to tragic loss of life.
In response, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) intensified efforts to restore order, engaging transport operators in a crucial meeting in Harare yesterday.
Speaking at the meeting, Officer Commanding ZRP Harare Province, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, reassured operators that compliant transporters would be protected while violators face strict penalties.
“Those with all required documentation and who follow the rules will operate without interruptions,” said Commissioner Chikunguru. “However, non-compliance will attract serious consequences, including vehicle impoundment.”
He emphasized the importance of cooperation between transport operators and law enforcement, adding, “Let us work together to build a safer, more orderly transport sector. My door is always open for complaints or suggestions.”
Chief of Staff Operations, Commissioner Dr. Bazibi Dube, warned against complacency, dismissing rumors that ongoing enforcement measures would soon be relaxed.
“The operation will continue until there is complete sanity on our roads. Anyone thinking they can wait out the crackdown is mistaken. We are committed to long-term order and safety,” he said.
The discussion also aimed to address the growing concerns about reckless behavior on the roads.
A transport operator voiced frustration, calling for stricter law enforcement.
“We urge the ZRP to enforce proper policing to ensure order on our roads. This meeting is essential for sharing ideas on restoring sanity,” he said.
Another operator highlighted selective enforcement of regulations, saying, “Police officers sometimes target compliant vehicles while overlooking unregistered ones. We need fairness and a level playing field to operate freely.”
The meeting, attended by all major public transport operators in Harare, ended with unanimous agreement on the need to restore discipline on the roads. Operators pledged to support the ZRP’s initiatives, recognizing that a safer transport system benefits everyone.
This renewed partnership between transport operators and law enforcement offers hope for a future where Harare’s roads are no longer traffic jungles but spaces of order and safety. As the crackdown continues, the goal is clear, to reclaim sanity on Zimbabwe’s roads for the benefit of all citizens.
