The Chinotimba Drug Detox and Rehabilitation Centre in Victoria Falls has made significant progress, with Phase 1 now operational. This initiative, led by the National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care and the Victoria Falls City Council, aims to combat the rising menace of substance abuse in the region.
In a statement, Dr. Aspect Maunganidze, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, emphasized the project’s importance
“This development is very crucial as it offers a lifeline for individuals affected by substance abuse and serves as a crucial step in breaking the cycle of addiction,” he said
In an interview with this publication, Victoria Falls City Council spokesperson, Nkosana Sibanda stated that Phase 2, scheduled for 2025, plans to construct a 30-bed long-stay rehabilitation facility to provide extended care for residents requiring intensive treatment.
“The establishment of this facility is a critical step towards addressing the substance abuse challenges within our community,” Sibanda stated
In addition to the developments in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe has seen the establishment of other rehabilitation centers this year. In Harare, efforts are underway to reopen drug rehabilitation facilities to address the city’s substance abuse issues.
Meanwhile, government in collaboration with the Bulawayo City Council has initiated the conversion of abandoned buildings into rehabilitation centers. This includes converting a ward at the Ingutsheni Psychiatric Hospital into a 20-bed rehabilitation facility and refurbishing facilities at Emakhandeni and Lobengula to serve as drop-in centers for outpatients.
These initiatives reflect a nationwide commitment to providing comprehensive support for individuals battling substance abuse, aiming to foster healthier communities across Zimbabwe.
