Former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Nelson Chamisa, has come under fire from Zimbabweans for continuing to promise his supporters and sympathisers the formation of a new political party.
This backlash follows his remarks at an Annual Charity Dinner he hosted in Harare, where he declared that a new party was “coming soon” and urged patience among his followers.
Chamisa’s remarks delivered at the high-profile event attended by local business figures and community leaders have sparked widespread ridicule on social media, with many accusing the embattled politician of lacking direction and political maturity.
Prominent political analyst and former cabinet Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticise Chamisa’s remarks.
“This is the same old ‘new’ coming back as ‘new’ again,” Professor Moyo posted.
Other netizens were quick to echo similar sentiments, dismissing Chamisa’s assertions as evidence of his waning influence on Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
“Chamisa is a spent force. He keeps selling dreams, but the reality is that his time in politics is up. Zimbabweans need leaders who are serious about change, not perpetual campaigners with no plan,” wrote Tatenda Mavhunga.
Another user, Vimbai Gutu, described Chamisa’s remarks as “tired rhetoric.”
“He has been singing the same song since 2018, and nothing has changed. A new party? Who does he think he is fooling? He is just trying to remain in the limelight,” said Gutu.
Political blogger, Takudzwa Nyandoro was equally critical, saying, “Chamisa’s problem is that he believes his charisma alone can carry him. The people are waking up to his lack of substance. Zimbabwe needs leaders with vision, not recycled promises.”
Chamisa’s political career has been on a downward trajectory since the CCC suffered devastating losses in the August 2023 elections.
The party’s disintegration and his failure to mount a coherent opposition strategy have left many questioning his relevance in Zimbabwean politics.
While he continues to claim that a political revival is on the horizon, critics argue that his inability to adapt and address pressing national issues has eroded his support base.
As Chamisa’s supporters await further clarification on his plans for a new political formation, the scepticism from political analysts and ordinary citizens alike suggests that the road ahead for the former CCC leader will be fraught with challenges.
For now, his promise of “something new” appears to have only deepened doubts about his political future.
