President Mnangagwa has reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of retirees through comprehensive social protection measures.

This was highlighted during the inaugural Public Service Commission Retirement Conference held in Harare yesterday.

Running under the theme “Embracing a New Chapter: Empowering Public Sector Workers for Retirement with Dignity,” the event aimed to equip retirees with tools for a fulfilling post-employment life.

President Mnangagwa, represented by Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, emphasised the need for participatory development, urging retirees to use their skills to foster growth in their communities.

“This milestone demonstrates the Second Republic’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that those who have served our nation with honour retire with dignity. Retirement should mark the beginning of a new chapter of contribution to the prosperity of provinces, districts, and communities,” he said.

Government has introduced several reforms to strengthen social protection for retirees.

These include the Defined-Benefit Pension Scheme, which guarantees lifetime income based on factors such as salary and years of service.

“The Government, as the largest employer, ensures a secure retirement by bearing the risk if investment returns fall short of the defined benefit,” added the President.

Public Service Commission Chairperson Dr. Vincent Hungwe urged active public servants to take advantage of government policies to prepare for retirement.

“We want to cultivate an independent elderly population that continues to contribute to national development. Initiatives such as access to housing, growth point development, and title deed issuance are all part of the broader plan,” he said.

The three-day conference brought together retirees, public servants, and retirement experts to explore opportunities for securing financial independence, health, and dignity in retirement.

As the Second Republic continues to prioritise the welfare of its workforce, the conference serves as a platform to ensure that retirement is not an end but a transformative phase where public sector workers can thrive and contribute to their communities.
