Three robbery suspects arrested after Bulawayo shootout

Three suspected armed robbers were arrested in a dramatic shootout with police in Luveve, Bulawayo, as law enforcement cracks down on escalating robbery cases in the region.

The suspects—Moketsi Ndlovu (18), Respect Khumalo (22), and Onias Tembo (19)—were linked to a series of violent robberies involving motor vehicles in Bulawayo and Gwanda between July 2024 and November 20, 2024, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

The arrests followed a police tip-off that led a specialized crack team to the suspects' hideout on November 25, 2024.

Upon arrival, the suspects reportedly opened fire on the officers, prompting a shootout.

Police overpowered the trio, seizing a 9 mm FN-Browning Pistol, three live rounds, and eight empty cartridges.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrests yesterday, revealing that the suspects are connected to multiple armed robbery cases.

“These individuals are linked to three significant robbery incidents, including one on October 1, 2024, along Jungle Road, Harrisville, Bulawayo, where a Toyota Fun Cargo (registration AEA 5078) was stolen. Another incident occurred on November 13, 2024, in Reigate Township, Bulawayo, where suspects stole a Honda Fit (registration ADU 1198), a cellphone, ZAR 500, and USD 15. The most recent case was on November 20, 2024, at Chigumira Business Centre, Bulawayo, involving the theft of a Ford Ranger (registration AFN 6255), which was later recovered at a railway crossing in Spitzkop, Gwanda,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

The ZRP has also launched a manhunt for a fourth suspect, Elvis Charakupa (41), who remains at large.

His last known address is 96/7878 Mpompoma, Bulawayo. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 703631, send a WhatsApp message to 0712 800 197, or report to their nearest police station.

Commissioner Nyathi assured the public that the ZRP is unwavering in its commitment to combating armed robbery, emphasizing that crack teams remain vigilant in ensuring justice prevails.

Security expert, Lloyd Siziba has urged citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety.

“This time of year often sees an increase in crime, and we advise the public to be cautious, especially when handling cash or valuables,” Siziba warned.

Meanwhile, the ZRP reiterated its commitment to ensuring law and order, urging the public to work together with the police to make the festive season a safe and secure one.
