Vice-President Dr. Constantino Chiwenga will today open the first-ever Zimbabwe-Zambia (Zim-Zam) Energy Projects Summit in Victoria Falls.
Running from today to Wednesday under the theme “Powering Zimbabwe and Zambia’s Sustainable Energy Future: Unlocking Opportunities in Renewables, Grid Modernisation, and Energy Access,” the three-day summit aims to foster collaboration between the two nations and key energy partners to drive sustainable energy solutions.
As both countries grapple with critical power shortages exacerbated by breakdowns at Hwange Thermal Power Station and water scarcity at Lake Kariba, they have prioritized exploring renewable energy options such as solar and wind.
The summit brings together energy experts, regulators, and industry leaders from Zimbabwe, Zambia, and beyond, reflecting a shared commitment to diversifying energy sources and enhancing grid resilience.
The event, hosted by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), seeks to position Zimbabwe and Zambia as attractive investment hubs for sustainable energy projects.
Organizers emphasized the summit’s role in showcasing how both nations are working to create an investor-friendly environment through innovative and bankable renewable energy initiatives.
“This platform will offer local and international investors a chance to explore current and upcoming energy projects, fostering new partnerships and collaborations,” ZERA said in a statement.
ZERA’s chief executive, Addington Mazambani highlighted the importance of private sector investment, noting, “Given the ongoing droughts and energy shortages, attracting private investments in alternative energy is key. This summit represents a pivotal moment to collectively shape a sustainable energy future.”
Zimbabwe and Zambia have been exploring strategies to counter persistent energy challenges, including plans to develop the Batoka Gorge Hydro Electric Power Station as a long-term solution to mitigate hydrological issues affecting Kariba.
By fostering regional cooperation and innovative energy projects, the summit is expected to accelerate progress towards energy security and economic development.
