Geo Pomona Waste Management (Pvt) Ltd, a key player in sustainable waste solutions, has taken the stage at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, with the aim of fostering strategic partnerships and amplifying its role in global climate change initiatives.
The company’s commitment to environmentally friendly solutions and sustainable development has drawn attention, positioning it as a regional leader in waste management innovation.
In an interview on 10 November 2024 on the sidelines of COP29, Geo Pomona’s Executive Chairperson, Dilesh Nguwaya emphasized the company’s mission to contribute meaningfully to climate change mitigation.
“The company is committed to sustainable development and will gain from deliberations at COP29. Through active engagement in conference sessions, our team hopes to gather insights from global experts and share Geo Pomona’s own achievements, particularly in waste-to-energy technologies.
“As a regional pioneer, we are eager to share our knowledge and explore opportunities to expand such projects not only within Zimbabwe but across the African continent, underscoring Geo Pomona’s ambition to set new benchmarks in waste management across Southern Africa,” said Nguwaya.
Nguwaya highlighted that the crucial aspect of Geo Pomona’s COP29 participation is seeking climate finance partnerships to enable the company’s growth.
“We will be engaging in side meetings with potential climate change financiers to discuss investment opportunities that will allow us to scale up our operations and make a greater impact. By securing international investment, Geo Pomona aims to expand its innovative projects and maximize their environmental impact.
“Following a visit by regional leaders during the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit hosted by Zimbabwe in August, Geo Pomona is now setting its sights on expanding into other Southern African countries. The company’s commitment to climate action and environmental transformation is establishing it as a leader in sustainable practices across the region, with its presence at COP29 marking a significant step toward achieving a broader environmental impact on the African continent,” Nguwaya stated.
The company’s flagship project in Harare is a prime example of its transformative approach. Geo Pomona turned the former Pomona dumpsite, once an eyesore in the city, into an eco-friendly, multipurpose waste management facility. Using cutting-edge technologies and knowledge from both local and international experts, Geo Pomona has successfully transformed the site into a model of sustainable waste management that incorporates energy production. This energy is set to be fed into Zimbabwe’s national grid, contributing to the nation’s energy mix.
Through participation at COP29, Geo Pomona Waste Management reaffirms its dedication to eco-friendly innovation, with ambitious plans to extend its pioneering waste-to-energy model well beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.
