Government has allocated air rescue ambulances to various provinces, marking the rollout of the country's first-ever air ambulance service.
This initiative follows the delivery of 18 helicopters from Russia last year, as a result of a public-private partnership between Zimbabwe and the Russian Federation, highlighting the deep and cordial relations between the two nations.
Out of the six air rescue ambulances now serving the health sector, two are stationed in Bulawayo, one in Victoria Falls covering Matabeleland North, two in Harare, and one in Manicaland Province.
The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, said that this strategic allocation aims to ensure prompt and efficient medical emergency responses across the country.
“We are operationalizing the air ambulances. The helicopters have been converted into ambulances, and we have staff that has received training and they are accustomed to the services they are to offer. Our pilots are being trained as we speak. This significant development aims to enhance the nation’s healthcare infrastructure and align it with global standards, ensuring swift and effective medical assistance for those in need,” said Minister Mombeshora.
National Chairman of the Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations and Residents Trust (ZNOART), Shalvar Chikomba, commended the initiative.
"The introduction of air ambulances is a ground breaking development for Zimbabwe. This initiative will significantly enhance the country’s emergency medical response capabilities and ensure that patients receive timely and advanced medical care,” said Chikomba.
Citizens have also expressed their approval and appreciation for the Government's efforts to improve healthcare services.
"This is a much-needed development. It shows that the Government is serious about improving our healthcare system and saving lives,” said Tendai Chikowore, a Harare resident.
Another citizen, Nomalanga Moyo from Bulawayo, added, "With these air ambulances, people in remote areas will have better access to medical facilities. It's a big step towards ensuring that everyone, regardless of their location, can receive proper medical attention."
Meanwhile, air ambulances play a critical role in transporting patients from areas with inadequate medical facilities to hospitals equipped with higher levels of care.
These specialized aircraft are designed to navigate geographical barriers and provide the same level of medical care available in an intensive care unit (ICU).
They are also utilized to repatriate patients who are unable to travel via commercial flights.
Government's investment in air ambulances underscores its commitment to modernizing Zimbabwe's health sector and improving access to essential medical services for all citizens.
