Zimbabwe’s opposition and civil society organizations are reportedly orchestrating a series of illegal protests meant to disrupt the upcoming SADC Summit.
A source who spoke to this publication revealed that the Citizens' Coalition for Change (CCC) Chamisa faction is clandestinely establishing a network of safe houses to harbour activists participating in the planned demonstrations.
These covert sanctuaries, set to be operational by mid-August, when the SADC summit begins, are being stocked with supplies to support the protesters.
“The opposition is taking extensive precautions to keep these safe houses hidden from law enforcement. They fear a crackdown is imminent,” said the source.
According to the same source, the civic groups involved in this secretive initiative include the Heal Zimbabwe Trust, led by Rashid Mahiya, along with the Tree of Life, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, and the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights.
The source added that opposition figures involved in this defiant operation include Peter Mutasa, Morgan Ncube, Amos Chibaya, Samuel Meso, Wellington Ruzvidzo, Denford Ngadziore, Job Sikhala, Jacob Ngarivhume, and Darlington Chigwena.
However, Ngadziore is reportedly developing cold feet and is contemplating resigning as the faction’s National Youth Taskforce leader.
The source further reported that the protesters are receiving undisclosed financial support to bolster their participation in the planned demonstrations.
Political commentator Tanaka Hove has castigated the opposition’s tactics, arguing that such clandestine activities are designed to incite chaos rather than foster meaningful dialogue.
“This move by the opposition is a deliberate attempt to destabilize the country at a critical time. It is irresponsible and dangerous, jeopardizing the peace and stability that Zimbabwe desperately needs,” Hove stated.
