Yesterday marked a significant milestone for agricultural education in Bulawayo, as the Nketa School Business Unit was officially launched by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, Dr. Obert Jiri.
The ceremony was held at Nketa High School and attended by a host of dignitaries, including MPs for Nketa Albert Mavhunga, Cowdray Park Arthur Mujeyi, Tsholotsho South Musa Ncube, and the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment Development and Vocational Training, Kudakwashe Mupamhanga.
During his address, Dr Jiri emphasised the crucial role of school business units in shaping Zimbabwe's future through education.
"School Business Units are not just educational tools but are vital in imparting practical entrepreneurial skills to students, preparing them robustly for the business world," Dr Jiri stated.
The event highlighted the importance of intensive farming and the adoption of sound farming practices.
"Intensive farming and good farming practices are key to maximising agricultural productivity, ensuring food security, and advancing the development goals of Zimbabwe and other Sub-Saharan African nations," Dr Jiri further elaborated.
The Permanent Secretary cited Japan, Iran, and Israel as exemplary nations in intensive farming, inspiring Zimbabwe to unlock its potential.
Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment Development and Vocational Training, Cde Kudakwashe Mupamhanga, spoke on the importance of innovation and discipline among the youth.
"We urge our youth to embrace innovation and discipline, as they are the cornerstones of success. It's crucial for MPs, Government officials, and development partners to collaborate closely to realise our national aspirations," said Deputy Minister Mupamhanga.
The event also showcased Nketa High School’s dedication to agricultural development through its maintenance of a nutritional garden that produces a variety of crops and poultry, demonstrating the practical applications of the teachings of the newly launched School Business Unit.
This initiative aligns with the Government’s commitment under the leadership of President Mnangagwa to transform Zimbabwe into an upper middle-income country by 2030, focusing on practical and sustainable agricultural practices that empower the next generation.
