Zimbabweans across the political divide have described the Government’s March 2024 deadline for miners to submit plans for the local production of battery-grade lithium as a game changer that will boost employment opportunities, as well as stimulate economic growth.

In a conversation with an international media house last week Mines and Mining Development Deputy Minister, Polite Kambamura, said government was not reneging on its beneficiation plans despite a global fall in the price of the mineral.

Zimbabwe is touted as Africa's top lithium producer.

In November 2023 the Mines Ministry gave miners until March 2024 to submit plans for the local production of battery-grade lithium, used in the production of electric vehicles and clean energy storage, as it hopes to benefit from a global shift from polluting fuels.

"This is exactly what our country needs. Not only will it create jobs, but it will also stimulate economic growth and reduce our reliance on traditional industries," declared Chipo Dodzo, a young entrepreneur from Bindura.

Tawanda Muchenje, a farmer from Masvingo, shared this sentiment, emphasising the importance of diversifying Zimbabwe's economy.

"For too long, we have depended on agriculture alone. Now, with the opportunity to participate in the lithium industry, we can broaden our horizons and secure a more prosperous future for generations to come," he remarked.

Dr Nyasha Mutizwa, a researcher from Harare, is also enthusiastic about the initiative's potential.

"As a scientist, I am thrilled by the prospect of contributing to the development of clean energy technologies right here in Zimbabwe. This initiative not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also positions our nation as a leader in innovation and progress," he explains.

With the deadline for plan submissions drawing near, anticipation is running high as miners prepare to unveil their strategies for local lithium production.

This move towards local beneficiation and value addition represents a significant step towards Zimbabwe's economic resilience and self-reliance.

As the nation eagerly awaits the next chapter in its economic evolution, the applause for this initiative serves as testament to Zimbabwe's determination to shape its own destiny in the global arena.
