The political landscape within the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) is reportedly undergoing seismic shifts, with party leader Nelson Chamisa losing his influence to Secretary General Sengezo Tshabangu.
A source who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity said that CCC was currently grappling with a crisis as it heads towards the February 2024 by-elections, with internal fractures becoming increasingly apparent.
The source revealed that a series of setbacks, including the barring of key CCC members from the upcoming elections and internal discontent, have shaken Chamisa’s leadership.
According to the source, the recall of several CCC legislators and councillors by Tshabangu has not only diminished Chamisa's support base, but also cast doubt on his ability to steer that party effectively.
"The internal strife is taking its toll on Chamisa's popularity and grip within the party. With the by-elections on the horizon, the recent recalls have led to questions about his leadership priorities," the source commented.
Furthermore, the source said that disillusionment has set in among some aspiring legislators who felt neglected by Chamisa, prompting them to declare their intention to run as independent candidates in the February 2024 elections.
This sentiment of abandonment has led to decisive actions from former CCC representatives.
“Former Chegutu West legislator, Admore Chivero and former Zvimba East legislator, Oliver Mutasa have registered as independent candidates for the by-elections, signalling a growing divide within the party's ranks,” the source added.
Compounding the disarray, the source said that CCC's deputy spokesperson, Gift Ostallos Siziba, faces potential disqualification from the by-elections due to non-compliance with a High Court ruling after his expulsion from that party.
"His participation is doubtful. He should not have filed his nomination papers as a CCC candidate yesterday. He is likely to be barred from contesting, as what happens to other recalled legislators," said the source.
As the CCC confronts these challenges, the trajectory of the party remains uncertain. With its leadership in question and its members seeking alternative paths, the upcoming by-elections may very well shape the CCC's destiny, for better or for worse.
