The political landscape in Masvingo is heating up as the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faces internal challenges ahead of the crucial Ward 2 by-election slated for 09 December 2023.
CCC’s recent campaign launch in Masvingo, marked by the conspicuous absence of several key CCC Masvingo City Councillors, has stirred up concerns of deepening rifts within its ranks.
A reliable source informed this publication that a campaign event, led by Farai Chinobva, the CCC’s director in the organising department, took place at the Gomba Shopping Centre in Runyararo West.
The event aimed to rally support for Shantiel Chiwara, that party's candidate and recalled former Mayor.
However, according to the source, the launch witnessed the attendance of only one councillor, Bernad Muchokwa of Ward 9, alongside a handful of local leaders.
The source said that Chinobva, addressing the paltry gathered supporters, voiced his frustration over the no-show of several council members and a local Member of Parliament.
Chaibva reportedly insinuated that their absence might signal a covert allegiance to the rival Sengezo Tshabangu faction within the CCC.
"The groundwork is what remains, as the election is already in our favour. However, missing this event could imply a shift towards Tshabangu,” the source quoted Chinobva.
The source added that, further intensifying the internal party dynamics, Chinobva publicly endorsed Chiwara as the official CCC candidate, simultaneously disassociating the CCC party from people’s favourite Roki Kamuzonda, thought to be linked with the Tshabangu faction.
“This battle transcends this ward; it's a direct contest between Chamisa and Tshabangu. Kamuzonda is not one of us,” Chinobva reportedly stated.
In response to these developments, newly elected Masvingo Mayor, Alec Tabe addressed the allegations of his absence from the campaign launch.
Tabe clarified that he had other pressing commitments and his absence did not indicate any political leaning.
“There are numerous ways to show support, and physical presence at events is just one of them,” Mayor Tabe remarked.
Deputy Mayor, Daniel Mberikunashe and Ward 8 Councillor, Richard Musekiwa also reacted to Chinobva's pointed remarks.
Both officials challenged Chinobva's authority to question their commitment to the CCC, emphasising their extensive responsibilities as council members.
They refuted any insinuation of loyalty to the Tshabangu faction, asserting that their political journey was not dictated by Chinobva.
Meanwhile, this scenario in Masvingo highlights the complex internal dynamics and challenges currently facing CCC, as it prepares for the upcoming by-elections, reflecting broader issues of factionalism and loyalty within that party.
