In a resolute effort to combat the ongoing cholera outbreak, the Government has intensified its fight by implementing a series of robust strategies aimed at curbing the spread of the disease and ensuring public health safety.
During a post-cabinet press briefing today, Minister of Information, Broadcasting, and Publicity, Jenfan Muswere, highlighted the Government's commitment to proactive measures.
The Minister emphasized the critical need for comprehensive actions to address the persistent cholera outbreak effectively. "We will intensify Risk Communication and Community engagement, involving religious and local leadership. School health education on cholera and other diseases will also be ramped up to empower communities with knowledge," the Minister announced.
The Minister further outlined the importance of utilizing various communication channels. "We will continue to use existing media houses and digital platforms for content dissemination. It is crucial that accurate and timely information reaches every corner of the affected areas," the Minister stated.
Clean water access emerged as a key focus in the Government's strategy. "To address the issue of safe water, we will improve access to communities through the rehabilitation of boreholes and drilling of new ones. Clean water is fundamental in preventing the spread of cholera," the Minister affirmed.
In response to the outbreak, the Government is set to enforce strict public health measures. "In all communities reporting cholera cases, public health measures will be enforced. This includes restrictions on gatherings in cholera-affected areas and the supervision of all burials within these regions," the Minister clarified.
Vending practices, known to contribute to the spread of diseases in crowded spaces, will also see restrictions. "Vending will be restricted to designated areas only," the Minister announced, underlining the Government's commitment to minimizing potential points of contamination.
Acknowledging challenges faced by the Harare City Council in providing water and sanitation facilities, the Minister announced Government intervention. "Since Harare City Council is facing difficulties, Government is intervening, including in the maintenance of Harare City Council Water Bowsers. We want to ensure a continuous and reliable water supply," the Minister stated.
Lastly, the Ministry of Health and Child Care will play a pivotal role in monitoring and early detection. "The Ministry will intensify the monitoring of all provinces, ensuring that potential outbreaks are detected early for swift and effective responses," the Minister concluded.
