In a significant development, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe has announced the conviction of Henrietta Rushwaya, the President of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation, on charges of smuggling 6kg of gold.
According to an official statement from the National Prosecuting Authority, Rushwaya has been convicted after she was caught red-handed at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport while attempting to smuggle gold valued at USD 333,042.28 out of the country to Dubai.
“The President of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation Henrietta Rushwaya has been convicted of smuggling 6kg of gold. Rushwaya who is appearing in the Anti-Corruption Court at the High Court of Harare was caught red handed at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport whilst smuggling gold valued at USD333 042.28 out of the country to Dubai,” read the statement.
Additionally, according to the statement Rushwaya now faces legal consequences as she has been detained in custody pending her sentencing, which is scheduled for November 10, 2023.
“She has been detained in custody pending sentence which will be handed down on the 10th of November 2023,”read the statement.
Furthermore, political analysts have commended Government's commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring that those involved in illegal activities face the consequences of their actions.
One political analyst Terence Chipwanya, emphasized on the consistency and dedication of President Emerson Mnangagwa and his Administration to the eradication of corruption, and highlighted that the recent conviction of Rushwaya was a concrete example that there shall be no sacred cows in the application of the law.
“The conviction of Henrietta Rushwaya demonstrates Government’s unwavering commitment at addressing corruption. It sends a clear message that the law is no respecter of persons, and that the long arm of the law eventually catches up with those involved in illegal activities and they will be held accountable,” said Chipwanya.
