Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader, Nelson Chamisa has been found once again with his hand in the cookie jar as he fails to pay his election agents the promised sum of US$200 for services rendered during the just ended 23 August 2023 Harmonised General Elections, promising rather to pay them a paltry US$50, while pocketing the rest, the Harare Post has learnt.
A source close to the development revealed that the CCC received over US$6 million from the European Union (EU) for the payment of its election agents with each agent expected to receive US$200, but Chamisa is said to be planning on diverting the money for his personal use, whilst using the remaining funds to justify not paying the agents the agreed amounts by stirring chaos in the country.
“The CCC has received over US$6 million from the EU and other donors for the payment of its election agents. The donors expect each agent to be paid US$200 before the end of this month.
“However, the election agents are likely to receive only US$50, as Chamisa and his close allies intend to divert the money for personal use and to also organise protests as a cover for the looting,” said the source.
According to political analyst, Anna Gumbo, there is a lot of pressure on Chamisa to appease the whims of his handlers, following his electoral loss.
“Chamisa is under pressure from some of his regional and international backers to cause some kind of protest and this has backed him into a corner forcing him to dip his hands into the same jar of money in order to finance an impossible task of stirring protests.
“Zimbabweans are not moved to rush into the streets to do protests as the majority of them are self-employed, therefore they are not motivated to leave their shops, warehouses and stalls to participate in destructive activities. Such an event is highly unlikely in Zimbabwe,” Gumbo said.
Meanwhile, Chamisa seems to be fighting a losing battle as most of his party members that succeeded in the just ended plebiscite, have already been sworn as Member of Parliament and Councillors, thereby rendering his calls for fresh elections null and void.
