Information reaching the Harare Post says that the opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa, is formulating a scheme to produce counterfeit letters that supposedly originate from the Zimbabwe War Veterans Association.
These alleged fake documents would challenge the legitimacy of the recent election results, which confirmed President Emmerson Mnangagwa's victory with 52.6% of the total vote count.
The purported scheme surfaces amidst a backdrop of insufficient evidence to back the CCC's claims of election rigging. Apart from a disputed report by Nevers Mumba, no internationally accredited institution has given credence to Chamisa's assertions that the electoral process was compromised.
An insider who opted for anonymity disclosed details of the alleged plan.
"Chamisa has tasked the CCC’s organising secretary, Amos Chibaya, to assemble a team that will craft a counterfeit letter on the letterhead of the Zimbabwe War Veterans Association. This letter would denounce President Mnangagwa's election win and call for a new round of elections," said the source.
According to the source, the fraudulent letter would contain forceful language, including statements like, "This is not what we fought for. We fought for voting rights, which ZANU PF is denying the people of Zimbabwe."
The same source added that the CCC planned to circulate this fabricated letter through several notable publications such as the Zimbabwe Independent, The Standard, NewsHawks, and NewsDay. Moreover, the letter is expected to find its way onto social media platforms, particularly those associated with Team Pachedu, Hopewell Chin'ono, Freeman Chari, and others who are sympathetic to the CCC's cause.
The source indicated that the CCC's alleged machinations may extend beyond just the War Veterans Association. The opposition party is also contemplating to create fake letters from the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions to further delegitimize President Mnangagwa's re-election.
In stark contrast to these alleged activities, authentic representatives of the Zimbabwe War Veterans Association have officially congratulated President Mnangagwa on his electoral triumph.
On the global front, international leaders, including President Vladimir Putin, President Cyril Ramaphosa, and President Alexander Lukashenko, among others, have sent congratulatory messages endorsing President Mnangagwa's re-election.
Meanwhile, political analyst, Edith Mushore said that the CCC move highlighted the lengths to which some parties might go to challenge electoral legitimacy.
