In a recent revelation, Nelson Chamisa, leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), appears to be shifting his stance amid mounting pressures and uncertainties surrounding the upcoming elections.
High-ranking sources close to Chamisa disclose that he has been candidly sharing his concerns about the slim chances of the CCC clinching victory in the forthcoming polls and is, consequently, contemplating pushing for Government of National Unity (GNU) post-elections.
Insiders have divulged that Chamisa, assessing the prevailing political atmosphere, deeply regrets not joining the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).
The source said that contrary to his previous stand, Chamisa now indicates a willingness to collaborate with ZANU-PF post-election.
"Chamisa expressed to his inner circle that ZANU PF is exuding tremendous confidence about their victory in the elections," one of the sources said.
Given these circumstances, it's rumoured that Chamisa was strategizing to negotiate a prominent role within the government, possibly pushing for a prime ministerial position or a ministerial appointment.
His alleged motivations behind this manoeuvre are not just political but also financial. Chamisa reportedly believes that such a position within the government would offer him access to significant financial backing.
The sources said that this new revelation was not being received unanimously within the CCC's ranks.
The source added that a growing faction within the party was said to harbour reservations about Chamisa's leadership capabilities, primarily due to the perceived stagnation in the opposition's momentum.
Given these internal apprehensions, there is burgeoning speculation about the possibility of an elective congress post-election, aimed at reshuffling the CCC leadership.
"Many members feel that under Chamisa's leadership, the opposition has not scaled the heights it's capable of. They are weighing the idea of a leadership overhaul should the election results not favour the CCC," shared a party insider.
Meanwhile, this newfound development paints a complex picture of the political landscape in the country, with alliances shifting and strategies being re-evaluated on the road to the elections.
