The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) will start today (1 February) a mobile voter registration blitz in the country’s 210 constituencies as part of preparations for the delimitation exercise ahead of the 2023 general elections.

In an effort to carry out a well-coordinated delimitation exercise that is informed by actual numbers on the ground, ZEC is embarking on a mobile voter registration blitz starting today.

Addressing the media in Harare recently, ZEC Chief Elections Officer, Utoile Silaigwana said the blitz will be held in two phases with the first phase starting on the 1st of February.

“ZEC advises the mobile registration will commence tomorrow on the 1st of February and will be held in two phases, from February 1 to 28, areas on commission websites, registration. The commission has 210 voter registration teams to cover 210 constituencies, this is in addition to the 63 district centres and 10 centres,” he said.

ZEC also informed that preparations for the by-elections pencilled for the 26th of March are at an advanced stage.

“We have ZWL4.5 billion for the exercise and treasury has started funding. On by-elections, preparations are on course and at an estimated budget of ZWL$3.6 billion,” he said.

ZEC Media Monitoring Committee Chairperson, Commissioner Joice Leticia Kazembe also revealed that media monitoring teams for by-elections have been activated.

“According to, SI 33 of 2008, all elections reports to be balanced with all participating political parties getting equal airtime and we urge journalists to follow provisions of the law,” she said.

Zimbabwe is heading for the by-elections on the 26th of March, with nine political parties set to participate including the newly registered Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), formerly MDC-Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa.
