The Zimbabwe Republic Police has issued a stern warning against rogue elements within the police force who continue using spikes and smashing windscreens as a way of enforcing compliance especially among public transport drivers, despite previous communication forbidding them.
In a memorandum addressed to officers in charge of Mbare District, from officer commanding police Mbare, the superior expressed the organization's displeasure over this issue.
“This headquarters has noted with great concern continuous use of spikes and smashing of windscreens by members in violation of the laws of the country,” it reads.
“It should be noted that such practice is unlawful, unacceptable and not condoned by the organization. This conduct exposes the organization to avoidable litigations from affected members of the public.”
The warning further stated that despite several memoranda having been previously sent out to districts for officers to desist from such practice, it had been observed that the members were persisting with this practice. As such, disciplinary action was being considered against offenders.
This warning comes after an incident involving a woman and a child who had a windscreen smashed upon them, while in a commuter omnibus. Police apologized for this encounter as it had the potential to injure innocent citizens, and assured the nation that they would come up with better initiatives to enforce arrest, which does not involve endangering innocent citizens.
