The embattled MDC Alliance is reportedly in a firefighting mode following massive defections and internal squabbles currently bedeviling that opposition outfit.
Salacious details revealed to this publication by a source showed that the MDC Alliance was worried by the recent defections of its members to ZANU PF and its leadership has since resolved to meet the grassroots to pacify them and gauge their allegiance ahead of the 2023 plebiscites.
The source said the MDC Alliance leaders met with their grassroots supporters in various districts to water down the defections as nothing but a common political phenomenon.
“The leadership has been disturbed by the defections of our members to ZANU PF and they have resolved to go around the country assuring our supporters that the defections were just a political grandstanding meant to portray the MDC Alliance as a party on the verge of collapse. In their meetings with the grassroots, the leaders have been emphasizing that the defections were instead an advantage to them as rogue party members are eliminating themselves from the party,” said the source.
The source further revealed that some grassroots members accused the party of destroying itself by failing to deliver on its mandate.
“The grassroots have been complaining to the leaders that the party should do better in terms of service delivery as they are the custodians of many urban authorities. To that effect, the leadership informed the grassroots that the MDC Alliance was not to blame for poor service delivery in urban councils as their operations were being hampered by the recalling of their councilors by the MDC T,” added the source.
The source also revealed that the internal squabbles within that party came to the fore at a meeting held in Mashonaland West Province where members nearly exchanged blows over allegations of selling out to the MDC T.
At that meeting, the Province’s Youth Assembly Chairperson, Collins Mapfumo angrily stormed out of the meeting after pro-Chamisa members accused him of working with the MDC T Senator, Voice Chinake to facilitate the infiltration of MDC Alliance structures by the MDC T members.
Efforts to get a comment from MDC Alliance spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere were fruitless as she was not picking her phone.
