Economist and MDC-T Treasurer General, Tapiwa Mashakada has attributed the political misfortunes being faced by the MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa, to what he called a cabal led by that formation’s Secretary General, Charlton Hwende.
Speaking to this publication, Mashakada said the MDC Alliance was still embroiled in student politics and had on many occasions failed to interpret the law opting for politics of vengeance and violence.
“The succession war within MDC T was resolved by the Supreme Court which ordered an Extra Ordinary Congress which was ignored by the student leaders (Chamisa faction) in MDC T whereas the trade unionists embraced the Supreme Court judgement, hence the ideological rapture. The student leaders have lost the legitimacy of MDC T leadership. They lost all court battles. The student leaders are cornered. They have decided to form a new party called CCC or Citizens Convergence Coalition a euphemism for Chamisa Chete Chete.
“Sooner or later, blind CCC followers will realize the tomfoolery of following an individual rather than a party. The party is greater than individuals. My brother Nelson missed the opportunity to lead a united MDC T by defying the Supreme Court judgement and coming out as anti-rule of law guy. This was most unfortunate and I blame Hwende and the cabal for ill advising Chamisa,” said Mashakada.
Mashakada added that the MDC Alliance should stop blaming ZANU PF for their political misfortunes.
“At the end of the day we blame ZANU PF for our own lack of strategic thinking. This is the easiest scapegoat for failures, blame it on ZANU PF. When history is written some of the tactical mistakes committed by student leaders (Chamisa faction) will be accepted with a heavy heart but that will be too late. The MDC T will trudge on and protect the legacy of Morgan Tsvangirai which the student leaders have defecated and mocked,” added Mashakada.
Analyst Tashinga Chabayanzara said it would be difficult for Chamisa to move from Hwende’s grip considering that he has been the former’s financial backer for years.
Strenuous efforts to get a comment from Hwende were fruitless as he was not reachable.
