All is not well in the MDC Alliance with reports saying that Nelson Chamisa has buckled under pressure from that party’s National Standing Committee (NSC) and suspended the Secretary General Charlton Hwende for bullying other party members.
An MDC Alliance insider who spoke to this publication yesterday, said members of that party have complained to Chamisa over Hwende’s bullying tactics that are meant to frustrate senior members into resigning.
“Some NSC members have complained to the president (Chamisa) over Hwende’s bullying behavior meant to frustrate other senior members into resigning. The senior members urged Chamisa to reprimand Hwende or risk losing popularity among the NSC. At first, Chamisa didn’t want to suspend Hwende, but he was told by Job Sikhala that if he fail to reprimand Hwende, then he must not cry foul when members revolt against him,” said the insider.
The insider added that the majority of the NSC members view Hwende as a toxic and a divisive character who orchestrated the departure of senior members of the party, including Douglas Mwonzora and Morgan Komichi.
“Hwende has orchestrated the departure of senior members like Mwonzora and Komichi after he incessantly abused them verbally during meetings. Some senior members such as Sikhala and Thabitha Khumalo told Chamisa that they cannot sit back and watch while Hwende was single handedly destroying the opposition outfit, hence his suspension” added the source.
However, the MDC Alliance are trying to hoodwink the public into believing that Hwende was not suspended, but was on leave.
A letter written by MDC Alliance’s Secretary for Presidential Affairs, Jameson Timba to that party’s National Standing Committee and National Executive Committee, alleged that Hwende was on leave.
“Please be advised that the President (Chamisa) has with immediate effect appointed David Chimhini as the Acting Secretary General in terms of the constitution until the return of our Secretary General Charlton Hwende,” reads the letter from Timba.
The MDC Alliance ship is sailing in turbulent waters with more members expected to ditch the opposition outfit over Chamisa’s failure to steer the party to political success.
