Gutu likens HCC to a dilapidated war zone

MDC-T Deputy President, Obert Gutu has slammed MDC led Harare City Council for its failure to provide proper service delivery to rate payers and restore the capital city to its former sunshine city status.

Posting on his twitter page, Gutu dismissed accusations by some opposition elements that he has a bone to chew with the MDC officials.

“Driving through the City of Harare and its environment feels like you're visiting an abandoned and dilapidated war zone. Broken down infrastructure, run-down roads, filth, uncollected garbage etc. Do we really have a local authority running Harare?

“Some people are accusing me of having an axe to grind with City of Harare councillors. No, I don't! I'm just stating facts, telling it as it is! City of Bulawayo is, by a distance, better run than the City of Harare. City of Harare is a hell hole. Period,” lamented Gutu.

Gutu said urban areas should have access to clean and safe piped water into homes and various other places.

“In this day and age, it's thoroughly embarrassing to drill bush pump-powered boreholes in urban residential areas in order to provide water to residents,” said Gutu.

With little or nothing to show for the money they are collecting from ratepayers, the majority of the MDC run urban local authorities have dismally failed to deliver basic services to residents.

The city fathers are failing to provide basic services like water, waste management and maintenance of sewer services and roads repairs, but instead spend more time on self-enriching corrupt activities.

The deplorable state of affairs in Harare, where residential places have mushroomed everywhere, and in some instances, in riverbanks and under ZESA main lines, merely points to a failed management system by MDC councils that long relegated its mandate and is now focusing on power struggles, corrupt and clandestine activities.
