The phased rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Nkayi Road is progressing steadily, with a fresh 13-kilometre stretch now set to be tarred. This vital project is part of Zimbabwe’s broader initiative to modernise its road infrastructure using locally sourced materials and expertise, in line with the Government’s “brick-by-brick” development philosophy.
The Bulawayo-Nkayi Road serves as a critical link in Matabeleland North Province, connecting rural communities with urban centres and facilitating both public and commercial transport.
Motorists and local residents have welcomed the ongoing rehabilitation, noting the improvements are already making a difference in travel safety and efficiency.
“Repairs to this road are important as we use it frequently for both commercial and public transportation,” said one motorist.
A local community member added, “This is a crucial route for us. We appreciate the Government’s commitment to upgrading this road.”
Site foreman, John Rajah confirmed that work on the next phase of the project is well underway, with preparations in place to begin tarring the newly cleared 13-kilometre section.
“We are progressing smoothly with no major challenges so far. The groundwork is set, and we are ready to lay the tar,” he said.
During a recent site inspection, yesterday, Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Richard Moyo, expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of the work.
He commended the contractor’s commitment and emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum to complete the project on schedule.
“We are seeing first-hand the progress being made here. As long as the contractor stays on-site and work continues without delay, we are confident this road will be completed as planned,” said Minister Moyo.
Under the Second Republic, the Government has made infrastructure development a key pillar of national progress, with particular emphasis on upgrading transportation networks as a foundation for economic growth. The Bulawayo-Nkayi Road rehabilitation is one of several projects aimed at boosting regional connectivity and ensuring equitable development across provinces.
As work continues, the road stands as a symbol of the Government’s commitment to fostering inclusive growth and unlocking opportunities for remote communities.
