Yesterday, the Government, through the Secretary for Presidential Affairs in the Office of the President, Tafadzwa Muguti, issued a stern warning to illegal settlers, urging them to vacate unlawfully occupied rural, urban, or agricultural land, including grazing fields.
Reactions of citizens across various communities concerning this Government stance have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the Government’s intervention.
One resident from Glen Norah commended the Government’s stance, highlighting the detrimental impact of illegal land activities on their neighbourhood.
"We are grateful for this stance by the Government. In Glen Norah, where I was raised, hundreds of stands were sold illegally, grotesquely spoiling what was once arguably the cleanest high-density suburb in Harare,” she said.
Similarly, residents from other areas echoed the need for swift action to curb illegal land occupation.
A Chitungwiza resident by the name of Farai Muzokomba emphasised the urgency of the operation against the illegal land occupation.
“We are hoping that this operation will be fully expedited. There is chaotic illegal settling of home seekers by certain individuals, yet that area may be lacking proper schools and health facilities,” said Muzokomba.
Another resident of Glen View 7, William Madzimbamuto, voiced concerns about the encroachment on reserved areas designated for recreation and business.
“Recreation and business-reserved areas are now being illegally sold out. It’s high time the Government descends on those parcelling out land illegally,” said Madzimbamuto.
Further highlighting the severity of the issue, a citizen from Budiriro pointed out the invasion of school sites by illegal settlers.
"Even school sites in Budiriro have been invaded,” said the resident.
Meanwhile, yesterday’s announcement by Government prohibits traditional leaders from selling land, emphasising that those found guilty of illegally selling land will face legal consequences.
Political commentator Calvin Chitsunge said that Muguti’s statement underscores the Government’s commitment to restoring order, protecting property rights, and ensuring equitable access to land resources by citizens.
