Two Government ministries have collaborated in promoting the utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for national development aimed at creating a digitalized economy in Zimbabwe by 2030.

Addressing Government officials and invited guests, during a handover ceremony of the ICT equipment to the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities, the Minister of Information and  Communication Technology, Tatenda Mavetera, said that the handover of equipment is part of a mandate given to her Ministry by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“ICT has revolutionized our ways of living, working, and communicating. Its importance cannot be overstated, especially regarding shelter delivery in Africa and Zimbabwe. It is not a secret that we face numerous challenges in providing adequate housing for our growing population, and ICT can play a crucial role in addressing these issues.”

“Firstly, ICT can enhance communication and coordination among stakeholders in shelter delivery. Utilising mobile phones, internet connectivity, and social media platforms allows information to be instantly shared between Government agencies and development partners.

“This real-time data exchange enables better planning and resourced allocation for housing projects,” said Minister Mavetera.

Additionally, Minister Mavetera said that ICT development and adoption by the Ministry of Housing and Social Amenities will enable the Ministry to digitalize its financial transactions in executing the national housing objectives.

“Furthermore, ICT enables access to financial services that are essential for funding housing projects. Mobile banking has already proven successful in Zimbabwe by providing financial inclusion to millions without access to traditional banking services. With mobile money transfer systems such as Ecocash and One Money becoming widespread across Zimbabwe,  people can save money securely and purchase material for building or improving their homes”, said Minister Mavetera.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of ICT will provide digital skills training to empower individuals involved in national housing initiatives by equipping them with the technological knowledge needed to leverage available resources effectively.
