Armed robbers are increasingly preying on motorists along Zimbabwe's highways, with recent incidents highlighting the growing danger, particularly for those stranded or isolated.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, especially on the Harare-Mutare Highway, which has seen a spike in these crimes.

In an interview with this publication, Zimbabwe Republic Police National Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stressed the importance of caution for both motorists and transport operators when traveling on the country's highways.

“As the police, we have always said drivers should stick to the mandate given by their employers. They should not carry passengers when given a specific task by their employers. We want drivers to contribute towards their safety on the country’s roads. Drivers should strictly adhere to their assignments and avoid picking up unauthorized passengers,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

Commissioner Nyathi also urged cross-border bus operators to adopt stricter protocols for passenger identification.

"No one should board a cross-border bus without their name being noted down and verified. Bus operators must ensure their vehicles stop only at designated areas where rest can be taken safely, and any suspicious activity can be easily tracked by the police,” he explained.

Last week, ZRP arrested three suspects in connection with a robbery along the Harare-Mutare Highway. The incident involved a haulage truck driver who picked up three individuals in Msasa, believing them to be genuine travelers.

However, upon reaching Rusape, the suspects asked to be dropped off, only for two additional accomplices to emerge from the roadside bushes. The group attacked the driver, leaving him with severe injuries.

In another disturbing incident last month, a cross-border bus was ambushed near Beitbridge by a group posing as passengers headed to the Beitbridge Border Post. The suspects ordered the bus to stop, then robbed passengers of substantial amounts of US dollars and South African rand. Fortunately, those responsible for the bus robbery have been apprehended by the authorities.

With the rise in these highway robberies, particularly targeting stranded motorists and isolated drivers, it is crucial for travelers to take precautions, avoid stopping in unsafe areas, and report any suspicious behaviour to law enforcement.
