Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at ensuring that all citizens have access to sufficient food supplies in response to the looming threat of the El Niño-induced drought.
During yesterday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, the Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, outlined the measures being taken by the Government to address the drought situation.
“Today (Tuesday), I am pleased to announce that Government is taking proactive steps to ensure that no citizen is left behind in terms of food security,” stated Minister Muswere.
Minister Muswere highlighted that the registration of food-insecure individuals has commenced in all areas across the country’s eight rural provinces.
This initiative, led by traditional leaders and supported by Government officials, aims to identify and assist those most in need promptly.
Minister Muswere said that some families that were food insecure have received some grain relief from Government.
“To date, a total of 2 722.46 metric tonnes of grain, comprising 405 metric tonnes of traditional grains and 2 317.46 metric tonnes of maize, have been distributed to 247 576 food insecure people under the food deficit mitigation programme,” Minister Muswere stated.
In addition, Minister Muswere highlighted the Government’s on-going efforts to enhance irrigation infrastructure to increase food production in the country.
“Government is actively working to improve irrigation infrastructure. Despite the potential to irrigate two million hectares with the country’s 10 600 dams, only 217 000 hectares have functional irrigation.
“Efforts are underway to accelerate irrigation rehabilitation and development, with the establishment of village business units to mitigate the effects of climate change,” Minister Muswere added.
Meanwhile, Minister Muswere assured the nation that the Government would issue periodic updates on the food security situation and mitigation measures. “Government is committed to transparency and accountability in addressing the food security challenges facing our nation,” affirmed Minister Muswere.
Meanwhile, Government’s proactive stance against the looming drought underscores its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of citizens amidst challenging environmental conditions.
With concerted efforts and effective implementation of these measures, Zimbabwe is poised to mitigate the impact of the drought and ensure food security for all.
