President Mnangagwa today challenged Zimbabwean youths, especially those in the diaspora to embrace the spirit of patriotism by remaining loyal and connected to the country.
Speaking at the burial of the late national hero, Cde Heighten Nkomo at the National Heroes Acre today, President Mnangagwa hailed Cde Nkomo's spirit of dedication to the liberation struggle of Zimbabwe and urged the youths to emulate him.
"I also call upon our youth to emulate our departed national hero. Here lies a cadre who opted out of school at very tender age and sacrificed his life to join the armed struggle in pursuit of national independence even though he was born and grew up in exile. Drawing from this kind of commitment to our motherland, I challenge our young Zimbabweans born and growing up in the Diaspora, to remain connected and loyal to our great country. You are always welcome back to play your part,” said President Mnangagwa.
The President also said that youths should aim to acquire education and assist in the development of the country.
"In honour of the sacrifices made by the late Cde Nkomo and other departed cadres, our youths are further challenged to be patriotic and responsible so that they commit themselves in acquiring a good education and working in various ways to develop Zimbabwe. Our youth in tertiary institutions are urged to resist and reject the various machinations by political opportunists,” added President Mnangagwa.
President Mnangagwa further challenged all Zimbabweans to take a collective responsibility to ensure that we remain a peaceful and secure nation. He further challenged the country’s citizens to honour those that sacrificed for the country’s freedom by saying no to violence and undue foreign interference in our internal affairs.
Meanwhile, Cde Nkomo who died a fortnight ago at his homestead in the Bengo area of Gwanda was described by family spokesperson, Abel Nyamadzawo as a man of few words who was always there for his family. Nyamadzawo further said that Cde Nkomo was a distinguished patriot and a pioneer of the liberation struggle.
