One of the Elders, Mr Koffi Annan has hailed Zimbabwe`s level of preparedness for a free and fair elections scheduled for the 30th of this month.
Speaking at a Citizen’s Convention Manifesto on Friday in Harare Gardens, the elder and former UN Secretary General, Mr Anan said that Zimbabwe would always remain close to his heart.
He said that Zimbabwe used to be the bread basket of Africa and with the right leadership; the country could restore that status.
Mr Annan said that he last came to Zimbabwe in 1997 and expressed gratitude to the new dispensation which allowed the elders to visit the country and allowed international observers to be in the country.
Mr Annan reiterated that President Mnangagwa had promised a free, fair and peaceful election. “I am confident the country’s level of democracy has matured, with opposition parties freely participating even in rural areas,” he said.
He urged Zimbabweans to go in their numbers and vote on 30 July. He lambasted a culture of shunning voting saying those who do not vote are the ones who complain more.
Elder Annan said that Zimbabweans needed to work together to build Zimbabwe. He said Zimbabwe had so many professionals and skilled people who could come together with their different skills and build a better Zimbabwe.
The event which was organised by Citizens Manifesto saw a number of civic organisations attending including ZINASU and ZCTU.
