MDC Alliance continues to resort to resolving differences through fist fighting, a development that is likely to tarnish the electoral process if it continues unchecked.
A reliable source on condition of anonymity revealed that, recently in Mbizo Constituency, MDC Alliance supporters in favour of one Ekabet Sambayi, fought supporters of MDC Alliance Mbizo Constituency candidate, Settlement Chikwinya.
Sambayi is an independent candidate who ditched the alliance after a sham primary election that saw Chikwinya being imposed despite his growing unpopularity in the constituency.
The source said, “Violence broke out at a meeting when MDC Alliance member, Edger Fundira called for supporters to consider Sambayi as the National Assembly candidate for Mbizo. The statement resulted in Chikwinya’s supporters throwing fists at Fundira.”
Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) survey revealed that MDC Alliance is on top of perpetrating political violence.
A Political analyst, Mr Tafadzwa Mugwadi was quoted in The Herald stating that, “The MDC believes in provocative politics and does not believe in peaceful conduct. That is why cases of intra-party violence have been endemic in the MDC. (It is unfortunate) that they are parading certain names that they claim were killed or victimised by Zanu-PF yet history will one day show that it was actually an internal hatchet job in the MDC-T.”
Reported cases of MDC Alliance members attacking Zanu-PF and tearing off their party campaign posters are on the increase, Harare Post has established.
MDC Alliance, Goromonzi National Assembly candidate, Luke Tamborinyoka, is currently before the court over allegations of defacing a competitor’s posters.
The attacks on MDC-T leader, Thokozani Khupe by MDC Alliance hoodlums recently are a reminiscent of how that party is determined to promote hooliganism.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has repeatedly called for peace before, during and after this year’s harmonized elections.
