Government’s 60 million housing scheme for civil servants has been hailed as a lasting solution to the accommodation crisis that is bedevilling government workers.
The housing scheme, which will be a collaboration of government and the National Building Society (NBS) is part of the non-monetary incentives government is availing to cushion its employees.
Speaking to the Harare Post today, an NBS employee revealed that NBS would be availing houses to civil servants at an affordable price upon opening an account with them.
“Upon opening an account with us, any civil servant will be able to acquire the houses which range from 2 rooms to 4 rooms in the Dzivarasekwa area. No deposit will be required for the stands, but they just need to be an account holder with NBS then pay monthly instalments towards the houses,” she said.
Commenting on the issue, a civil servant Anorld Mupfawi commended Government’s efforts to improve civil servants’ welfare.
“This shows that our president and the government are very much concerned with the welfare of its workers regardless of the economic hardships it is facing right now. So it is now going to be easier for civil servants’ lives after being given these houses as they will not be paying rents. We thank government for their decision,” he said.
NBS Mortgage Manager, Prosper Zamanwe revealed that once one gets the house, they can renovate and extend according to their preference. He said the houses were located in a secure and accessible location.
