The much publicised MDC demo in Harare is highly dominated by drunkards, vagrants, hooligans and street kids. With this kind of line up, violence will be inevitable.

Most of the people present at the MDC Alliance demo are drunkards armed with various types of intoxicating substances ranging from illicit beer brews, glue, marijuana and cheap spirits. Some of the demonstrators helping themselves are under age boys and girls being helped to consume the substances.

Coordinated gangs of youths are roving around the square recruiting drinkers of the free beer. It is not difficult to notice that a fund has been set up to finance this effort as there is unsolicited distribution of the material to anyone who doesn’t show disinterest in the substances.

This writer is in possession of a strong Zambia-made cane spirit handed to him by the cooperating gangs.

Vendors who had been vacated from the CBD have taken advantage of this moment to make money and have flooded the square and its vicinities. Meanwhile, street kids and undisguised thieves are prowling ready to capitalise on the newfound opportunity.
