Institutions of higher learning particularly those which deal with technology have been urged to change the narrative of the country`s discourse from that of lack of modern technology to acquisition of real and fruitful researches that benefit the country.
In his acceptance speech at Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) after being installed as the second Chancellor, at a graduation ceremony held at HIT campus today, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said Universities must be able to drive innovation and commercialisation of technologies that create enterprises and jobs.
“Universities, HIT in particular should change the narrative of Zimbabwe`s discourse from that of technological want and aspirations to the acquisition of real tangible research and innovation outputs which has value to the lives of the people through the setting of new industries as well as companies that promote import substitution.
“Universities and in particular, HIT must drive the innovation and commercialisation of technologies that will result in the creation of enterprises that will create jobs and benefit Zimbabwe in all sectors,” he said.
President Mnangagwa highlighted that the Government is aware of challenges being faced by higher learning institutions with regards to institutional sustainability, adding that the Government will continue to make concerted efforts to facilitate the provision of the broad array of needs.
To the graduands, President Mnangagwa said, “Your prospects in the second republic are numerous and bright. Put on your full armour of research and innovation. Play your part in building a better Zimbabwe.”
President Mnangagwa capped 364 graduands drawn from the institute`s four schools namely Engineering and Technology, Information Science and Technology, Industrial Science and Technology and Business and Management and the institute`s 15 academic departments.
