The Parliamentary Portifolio Committee for Sports is set to engage all stakeholders involved in the refurbishment of the National Sports Stadium (NSS) to deliberate progress on the ongoing NSS development project.
Speaking to Journalists after touring the NSS, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for Sports who is also Mhondoro-Mubaira Legislator, Chamunorwa Chiwanza informed that the Portfolio Committee would soon engage all relevant stakeholders to deliberate on the slow paced development at the NSS.
“The first step was to come and evaluate progress on the ground as far as the infrastructure project is concerned, and now we are very much clear as to what is happening. I can assure you that very soon in the coming week or two, we will have a combined meeting between the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee and the Ministry of Finance to focus on the NSS issue.
“After that, there will obviously be an engagement with my counterpart the Chairman of the Local Government Portifolio Committee, where we intend to set a meeting between the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe and the Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Kirsty Coventry, so that they can work together to accelerate progress of the NSS rehabilitation,” said Chiwanza.
Chiwanza further emphasized on how the slow progress at NSS was negatively impacting the country as well as overshadowing the Vision 2030 efforts.
“Our greatest concern with NSS stem from the citizens’ outcry concerning the country’s National football team playing a home match away from home in South Africa due to the poor standards of the NSS. As the Parliament Portfolio Committee, we must protect our nation’s image, so that this does not happen again, by ensuring that our own facilities meet the required international standards,” Chiwanza said.
